This is the Victory Column
(Siegessäule) in the Tiergarten park. It was dedicated in 1873 to commemorate Prussian victories in wars against Denmark, Austria, and France. At its top is a gilded statue of Victoria, the ancient Roman goddess of victory. The American GIs who arrived in Berlin at the end of WW2 called this monument "the chick on a stick". A stairway leads to an observation platform under the statue. To see how Berlin appeared at the end of WW2, you can view this
amazing color film.
