The brick building is the Cable Car Museum, which also serves as the maintenance barn and power house for San Francisco's cable cars. Before the 1906 earthquake and fire, there were several of these power houses, and many more cable car lines. The cables were originally driven by steam engines, and that is why the building has a smokestack.
