The milk from these cows might be used to produce bergkäse (mountain cheese). Notice the bells on their necks - we often heard the gentle distant ringing of cow bells on our wanderings. Small farms like this could not survive without government subsidies. They are preserved as living museums of Swiss traditions. Some of the farms earn additional income by providing drinks, meals, and lodging to tourists.
